Teacher’s Pet (Kitty & Charles)
Kitty blushed again. “Thanks,” she said in a low voice. “Maybe you can point me to some of them then?” she said with a wry smile. Kitty was independent, she didn’t need a man’s attention to feel validated, but a girl had needs, y’know? She was debating the pros and cons of having a boyfriend when she realized that she was missing what Charles was saying. She tuned in when he said Erik Lehnsherr. So Charles knows his full name?
“I’d say so, yes. Maybe I’ll have to look him up, see if he’s got some embarrassing modeling photos,” Kitty grinned. She wasn’t surprised to hear that Charles had engaged Erik as his chess partner - Charles had always loved chess and from what she saw on Erik’s blog, he seemed intelligent enough to be a challenging partner. Kitty was surprised to hear that they were meeting for drinks. “Oh, I follow his blog online, and I’ve seen him around a few times,” she explained.
Kitty wondered what Charles was doing with Erik if Bruce was indeed his boyfriend, although she realized it wasn’t any of her business. Guys could be friends and go out for drinks without dating, she told herself. Or maybe Charles and Bruce had an open relationship. Kitty didn’t know. She wasn’t that big a part of Charles’ life and she certainly had no right to probe him further, so she let it go.
“What’s Erik like?” she had to ask. “He seemed kind of standoffish on his blog so I was a little afraid to talk to him.” Kitty was only a freshman, and Erik was older and seemed very busy with his architecture. “I’ve been trying to befriend as many people as I can on campus. So far everyone’s been really nice.” Kitty was tempted to tell Charles about Ali/Dazzler, but a promise was a promise, so she kept her mouth shut. “Have you met anyone interesting?”
"Well, if I find anyone, I’ll be sure to send them your way." He agreed. Although, honestly, he was terrible at match making. As good as he was at reading people, he was terrible at deciding what to do next. "Oh, right, his blog. Yes, he does come off as a bit standoffish." It seemed like everyone on campus had a Tumblr. "He’s really good at chess. I don’t know much more than that, really. We haven’t talked much. He owes me a drink because I made a bet that I would beat him at chess. He seems nice enough." Was Kitty trying to see if Erik was single? That had to be it. Why else would she keep asking questions? "Um, I don’t know. Loads of people. There’s this girl named Ali I absolutely adore, she’s a dear, she really is, and I mean there’s a few people from my classes I’m getting to know better."
