Teacher’s Pet (Kitty & Charles)
Kitty recognized that Charles didn’t want to talk about it. “If you say so,” she replied, with a hint of doubt. She wished he would tell her about it. Maybe when they became closer, he would want to talk. Kitty knew “never getting along” was the understatement of the century, although she didn’t know the specifics.
Kitty was reluctant to turn their conversation to her own parental problems. “Thanks, but I’m dealing. They waited until I was off at college to tell me, so I haven’t had a lot of time to dwell on it.” That wasn’t entirely true. Kitty often found herself lying awake in bed, thinking about what she could have done differently to make them stay together. Still, at least she didn’t have to deal with seeing them every day.
“College has been a great escape for me,” Kitty confessed. “You probably feel the same way”. Kitty grasped for a new topic. “You’re a senior, right? What do you want to do when you graduate?” she asked.
“Well, I’m sorry to hear about it anyways,” he said, patting her hand lightly. He decided it would be best for both of them to move away from the subject, so he was delighted when Kitty asked him about his future plans. ”Oh, go to graduate school. I still haven’t decided where I’m applying to yet, but definitely for genetics. If I survive that bit, I’d like to become a professor and do research.”
“So it’s a bit early to ask you that yet, but what else have you been up to? Read any good books? Seen any good TV shows?” he asked teasingly.
